Terms of Service
The agreement between us.
These terms explain what you can expect from Shoot For Meaning and what we ask of you in return. We have tried to keep them plain. By using the site — uploading a photo, creating an account, or browsing the techniques — you agree to what is written here.
1. Who we are
Shoot For Meaning (“Shoot For Meaning,” “SFM,” “we,” “us”) is a photography feedback and learning service. We help photographers understand their work through feedback, photographic voice analysis (the recurring visual patterns and choices that define your style), and technique training. Our analysis engine, Sonder, was purpose-built by a photographer to read photographs for meaning and visual technique.
2. Who can use Shoot For Meaning
You must be at least 18 years old to create an account, or at least 13 with the consent and supervision of a parent or legal guardian. By using the site you confirm that you meet this requirement and that the information you give us is accurate. Shoot For Meaning is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
3. Your account
- You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for everything that happens under your account.
- Let us know promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission.
- You may close your account at any time. Doing so removes your uploaded photos and associated feedback, as described in our Privacy Policy.
4. Your photographs stay yours
You keep full copyright and ownership of every photograph and everything else you upload. Uploading does not transfer any rights in your work to us.
To run the service, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide license to host, store, process, and display your photographs back to you, and to analyze them so we can generate your feedback, build your voice portrait, and improve how Sonder reads and grades photographs. This license exists only so we can operate and improve the service. We do not use your photographs to train generative AI, and we do not sell or share them. The license ends when you delete the content or close your account, except for copies retained briefly in routine backups or where we must keep them to comply with the law.
5. Acceptable use
By using Shoot For Meaning, you agree that you will not upload, submit, or share any content that:
- you do not own or have the necessary rights and permissions to submit;
- infringes anyone’s copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other rights;
- is unlawful, including any content that sexually exploits or endangers a minor — child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is strictly prohibited and will be reported;
- depicts non-consensual intimate imagery, or violence, harassment, or hate directed at others;
- contains malware, or is intended to disrupt, overload, or gain unauthorized access to the service.
You also agree not to misuse the service — for example by scraping it, reselling it, reverse-engineering Sonder, or using it to build a competing engine.
6. Content review, removal, and reporting
We do not pre-screen everything that is uploaded, but we may review uploaded content — including having a member of our team view photographs — to operate the service, improve Sonder, and keep Shoot For Meaning safe and lawful. We may remove content, and suspend or terminate accounts, that violate these terms or that we reasonably believe are unlawful. Where the law requires it, we will report illegal content to the appropriate authorities, including reporting suspected child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).
7. Feedback from Sonder
Feedback, grades, voice portraits, and technique guidance are produced by Sonder, our analysis engine, to support your growth as a photographer. They are interpretations meant to help you see your work more clearly — not statements of objective fact, professional advice, or guarantees of any particular outcome. You decide what your photographs mean and how to use what Sonder offers.
8. Our content and intellectual property
The site itself — including the Shoot For Meaning and Sonder names, the technique library, written lessons, example content, software, and design — belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by intellectual-property law. You may use it for your personal, non-commercial photography practice. Please don’t copy, redistribute, or build on it without our permission.
9. Beta, plans, and payment
Shoot For Meaning is currently in beta. During the beta, accounts receive the full Enthusiast experience at no cost, and subscriptions are not yet open. When we launch paid plans, prices and terms will be shown on our pricing page, and beta photographers keep the discount described there. We may change features, limits, and pricing as the service evolves; we’ll give reasonable notice of material changes that affect a paid plan you hold.
10. Availability and changes to the service
We work to keep Shoot For Meaning available and dependable, but we provide it on an “as is” and “as available” basis. We may add, change, suspend, or discontinue parts of the service, and we may set or adjust usage limits, at our discretion.
11. Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Shoot For Meaning is provided without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that feedback will meet your expectations.
12. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Shoot For Meaning will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising out of or related to your use of the service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the service will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or USD $100.
13. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold Shoot For Meaning harmless from claims, damages, and reasonable expenses arising out of content you submit or your breach of these terms — for example, a claim that a photograph you uploaded infringed someone else’s rights.
14. Termination
You may stop using the service and close your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these terms or to protect the service and its users. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — such as ownership, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and indemnification — will continue to apply.
15. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we’ll update the effective date below and, where appropriate, let you know in the app. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the updated terms.
16. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that isn’t resolved informally will be handled by the state or federal courts located in Texas, and you agree to that venue.
